DFG Review Board 409 - Prof. Dr Gregor Engels elected to DFG Review Board

Prof. Dr. Gregor Engels was elected by his peers in Germany to the review board 409 of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for the field of software engineering and programming languages for the year 2023. Together with two other colleagues from TU Dresden and Heidelberg University, he is responsible for evaluating funding proposals in this field.

"My job is to assess existing applications on a comparative basis in order to identify the projects most worthy of funding within the given financial framework," explains Prof. Dr. Engels. In this way, the work of the review board ensures that proposals are assessed according to uniform scientific evaluation standards across all DFG programs.

In individual funding, the review boards generally evaluate proposals on the basis of written reviews. In the coordinated programs such as Collaborative Research Centres, Priority Programmes, the Emmy Noether Programme or proposals within the framework of the Excellence Initiative, a review panel always assesses the proposals. At least one member of the relevant review board is involved, which ensures the necessary evaluation according to the same scientific evaluation standards. In addition, the review boards are also involved in the further development and design of the DFG's funding programs and in the discussion of funding policy issues.
